Why is genetic counseling an important component of my testing experience?

Answer:

We believe that all medical results should be interpreted and disclosed by a medical professional, and that genetics results would certainly be included in this. Genetic counselors know how to break down complex genetic information, to explain the "ins and outs" of genetic tests, and to debunk misconceptions people have about genetic health. They are an integral part of your medical team and your testing experience.

Genetic counselors work not only in the reproductive realm--you might encounter them in other areas of your medical care. Some other common specialties include pediatric, cancer, cardiovascular, and neuromuscular genetics. All types of genetic counselors take a global approach to your genetics by asking about your family health history, assessing your genetic risks, and offering appropriate testing options when needed. They are also there to provide emotional support and guidance along the way, both before and after receiving results.
